ON THE OLD PILGRIMAGE THAT is CARRIED OUT TO OUR SEÑORA DE ESCARDIEL HERMITAGE, LOCATED IN THE ESTRIBACIONES DE BROWN MOUNTAIN IN THE TÉRMINO DE CASTILBLANCO OF THE STREAMS (SEVILLE)

The origin of this historical pilgrimage is ignored, although everything makes think that it is one of the oldest traditions in the county of Seville.
Unquestionably, and when appearing in 1544 the first historical documentation on the Virgin's Brotherhood, only starting from this date one can talk of security about the celebration, although it is evident that you can date in previous enough dates.
During these first years in those that documentation written on the pilgrimage to the Virgin's Hermitage appears, this he/she was carried out the day 14 of August, eve of the Glorious Asunción's festivity of Santa María to the Skies. In this day, the Virgin's Brotherhood, presided over by their banner with Santa María Descardiel's Sancta Pintura", it left of the village of Castilblanco, accompanied with the stables that the own Brotherhood put to disposition of the ecclesiastical town council of the Villa. In the night of this day, and after arriving the pilgrims at the Hermitage, he/she was carried out the one that then called you veiled in the sanctuary, with dances and artificial fires. The following day, he/she took place the function in honor of the Virgin, followed by the procession for the surroundings of the Hermitage that he/she would make the Virgin starting from the year 1675 in you walk them that for such an end it carved the famous sculptor utrerano Francisco Antonio Gijón, like it consists in the existent documentation in the Provincial Historical File of Seville. Later on, and gathered the Fraternity in the porches of the Sanctuary, you proceeded to the steward's Election and the priostes for the following year. Once carried out, he/she took place a lunch for the town. Once concluded, one returned to the Villa in procession with the banner.
This form of celebrating the Virgin's party, was conserved during several centuries, being prominent that in the year 1752, and after a case of more than two years maintained between the Town council of the Villa and the Virgin's Brotherhood, he/she decided in friendly resolution that in exchange for the value of the acorn fruit that you/they produced the oaks of the Virgin's Chaparral, the Real Council of Castile, under Fernando's reign SAW it would contribute to the celebration of the Pilgrimage of the Virgin of Escardiel with the real quantity of 150 of fleece to be devotion of the Villa of Castilblanco like it is expressed in the Records to Surrender of the Town council of Castilblanco in October of this year 1752. These quantities were perceived by the Fraternity until the invasion napoleónica, being recaptured later with Fernando VII, but during sporadic years.

During the XIX century and because of the Disentailment of the ecclesiastical goods, the Pilgrimage of the Virgin of Escardiel would suffer a deep transformation. When depriving to the Fraternity of the Virgin's chaparral and to lose this their more important entrance source, he/she decided that the party instead of takes place in the Sanctuary he/she would take place in the Villa. This way, and starting from 1879, August 14 of it would come to the transfer from the Virgin to the vegetable garden of the Bridge, where he/she would take place the old one veiled of the Virgin. The following day, and traveling the streets of the Town, era taken to the Parochial Church, where he/she took place religious function and procession of the Virgin. In the Parish it would remain until second Sunday of September, day in that mounted in carts of oxen, transferred era the Virgin again to their historical Sanctuary.
By the middle of the present century, the ruined Virgin's sanctuary and their scarce economic possibilities being, a group of young of the town was devoted to the refundación of the Fraternity of the Virgin of Escardiel. After some years in that he/she stayed the tradition decimonónica of the Pilgrimage, in the year 1972 decided to recapture the very old Pilgrimage, although conserving the coming from the Virgin to the town every five years.
